Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Tilia FoodSaver Vac 550 Kit Vacuum Sealing SystemCustomer Review: Next to refigerator this is a MUST HAVE appliance .... Summary: 5 Stars
OK so whats the big deal you ask .... well two of the biggest items to hit my pocket book and taste pallete is food spoilage and freezer burn ....... Both of those things happen when fresh food is packed in containers or plastic bags WITH air in them. Microbes etc etc needs that air, so, when vaccuum packing food will remain fresher either in fridge, freezer or even on the shelf. I have had used one of these units for several months now and believe it or not, it's not under the counter like a million other supposedly money saving appliances...... How many time you opend a bag of potato chips, only to loose it in the cupboard and then find it stale, vac pack will extend and keep chips and crackers fresh. I buy italian parsely usually costs me a buck something but NEVER use the full bunch.... past ecxperience has always been to put it in the fridge(even if you put it in a glass of water as the recommended storage)then a week later when you need it again its, shriveled and useless. OK so its only 50 cents I'm throwing away but over the years I din't think I've ever used a full bunch of italian parsely EVER .... I now store it in Mason Jars (cheap as dirt I might add) OK so your refrigerator may start to look like a cooler in a biology lab with all the mason jars but WOW it's great to not throw unused portions away and have fresh food .... Vacuum pack steak and chicken etc etc with marinades and you one use less marinade, two it marinades in less time and three the marinade enters the meat .... you can no do this in the bags tho you have to muy one of their canisters .... The Tilia machines you buy does not come with the Mason Jar attachemnt so youll have to log on to the company site to buy it for like 9 bucks or something...... This is a must have and will save you a fortune on the bags .....
Description of Tilia FoodSaver Vac 550 Kit Vacuum Sealing SystemIngenious and simple to operate, Tilia's FoodSaver system seals food inside containers after vacuuming out the air--and the oxygen that causes foods to spoil. That means food stays fresh longer than when it's merely refrigerated or frozen. Meat, for example, remains good in the freezer for about six months; frozen inside a vacuum package, it remains good for two to three years--and it doesn't suffer freezer burn, either. Fish, coffee, cheese, crackers, sugar, nuts, oils, and wine all stay fresh three to five times longer when stored in a vacuum, whether they're frozen, refrigerated, or at room temperature. Also, silverware and other metal items won't tarnish when stored in a vacuum-sealed bag. Like all FoodSaver machines, this one vacuums air from containers and seals bags with a simple one-touch operation. The machine measures 15 by 5-1/2 by 3-1/2 inches, weighs 5 pounds, has a cord-storage compartment, and cleans easily with a damp, soapy cloth. It carries a one-year warranty against defects. An instruction booklet and video accompany the machine. The basic FoodSaver container is Tilia's three-layer VacLoc bag: it has two plastic layers and an outer nylon layer to keep moist foods (such as meat loaf or chocolate cake) moist, dry foods (such as brown sugar or flour) dry, and all foods from leaking odor. Included in this kit is one 11- by 10-inch roll for bagging, three quart size bags, and two gallon bags. For cooking, the bags can go directly into a microwave oven or boiling water. They're resealable, reusable, and dishwasher-safe. --Fred Brack
